Neighborhood you live in: Cole Valley
It’s Wednesday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I work from home in our 850 square foot Cole Valley apartment. Our building has floor-to-ceiling south-facing windows so it’s almost always bright and sunny, and I love to work from the sofa and watch the clouds roll across Sutro Tower.
What’s on the agenda for today?
MARCHÉ Holiday Marketplace planning (save the date: November 16, when we bring together more than 70 women-owned brands under one roof!), client calls, lots of emails, a mid-day walk with our dog Thistle, and making dinner at home after school pick-ups.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
During the week, I love Beit Rima and Blue Barn for take-out lunch in the neighborhood, and our family has a standing, weekly Friday afternoon trip to the ice cream window at Cole Valley Tavern for soft serve. We eat out (a lot) less with two young kids, but love Hook Fish in the Outer Sunset and Pizza Hacker at Tam Junction in Mill Valley.
How about a little leisure or culture?
We love biking in Golden Gate Park, visits to the Field Center at Tunnel Tops, and Free Gold Watch for the Dino egg game where kids win a prize every time. (For those who haven’t visited, for a quarter, kids get a plastic egg — that you can recycle in an egg drop afterwards — with a small prize which dispenses with an exclamatory, “Yabba Dabba Doo, Dino Loves You!”)
Any weekend getaways?
A few weeks ago, we went to the Lodge at Marconi in Tomales Bay and had the best time. We had oysters at the Marshall Store, pizza at Cafe Reyes, and the kids made s’mores by a fire. Without kids in tow, I love visits to Scribe and Bricoleur, and an overnight at Indian Springs. One of my absolute favorite Bay Area getaways was to Steep Ravine Cabins, perched on the edge of the Pacific. We snagged a cabin once, 10+ years ago now, and I’d love to go back.
What was your last great vacation?
We spend summers in New England with family in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. We swim nearly every day and eat a summer diet almost exclusively of tomato sandwiches, lobster rolls, salty chips and onion dip, and white wine. It’s perfect.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
A Lauren Manoogian camel coat that can be worn nearly all year round in San Francisco. I had it on my wish list for years, and can happily report I wear it almost every day during colder months and have zero buyer’s remorse. It’s warm and thick, the perfect weight and length, and makes any outfit feel timeless and chic. Right now, I’m coveting a watch from March Hare, candles from GLŌAM Goods, and a worn, vintage farm table from Elsie Green.
What store or service do you always recommend?
ODSY for shoe repair, Case for Making for special art supplies, Daiso in Japantown for kids’ stocking stuffers and small gifts (or a rainy day kids’ activity paired with a movie and ice cream at UJI Time); Outerlands and Foreign Cinema for a rare date night out; Zazie in Cole Valley for brunch on the back patio (always get the coffee cake on top of whatever else you’re ordering); and Land’s End Trail for the quintessential San Francisco hike.
