San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood was largely industrial for decades, a long stretch of factories lining its eastern waterfront. As manufacturing moved overseas, those warehouses were reworked into residential units, typically high-ceilinged live/work lofts with exposed brickwork, freight elevators, and curated grit. Folks who wished they’d gotten a bite of 1980s New York’s art scene flocked there in droves.
Thirty years after that initial wave of transformation, those spacious lofts are now a rare find (and amid the WFH era, the concept of a “live/work loft” feels charmingly retro). Yet a wave of new construction has made the neighborhood accessible to a generation beyond those early adopters, with glossy, Bay-view condos moving at a healthy clip: 28 in the past year, Compass reports, at a median price of $1.03M.
